Overview:

The Red Army juggernaut paused at the Oder River; its flanks exposed to the large German formations lurking inside Pomerania. STAVKA ordered Marshal Zhukov's 1st Belorussian Front to pivot north and drive to the Baltic coast. On 24 January, the Soviets struck and made good progress, encircling a large garrison at Arnswalde and capturing several key towns. German High Command devised Operation SONNENWENDE (Solstice) to relieve Arnswalde and placed Generalleutnant Walter Wenck in overall command. On 15 February, he ordered 11. SS-Panzerarmee, which included the 39 King Tigers of schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 503, to counterattack the Soviets along a broad front.
