Overview:
The fighting at Ponyri Station had been raging for two full days, and both the 1019th and 1023rd Rifle Regiments were nearly exhausted. Lt. General Nikolai Pukhov continued to move other elements of the 13th Army around to counter anticipated German moves while still maintaining a stable defensive line. Pukhov ordered the 4th Guards Airborne Division (held in reserve until 8 July) forward the following afternoon to relieve the encircled rifle regiments still defending the train station.
