Overview:

After the loss of Eselsberg , the Germans counterattacked inforce with elements of Panzer-Division 116 to restore control of this commanding ground running from Kellen to Riegel. A Company, 4th Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment had a large front to cover with an open flank. Even with the addition of a. pair of 6-pounder anti-tank guns and a section of 17-pounder Archer self-propelled guns from 59th Anti-Tank Regiment, A Company was still stretched thin. During the night of the 13th/14th, the Germans conducted several probing attacks and patrols. Then, at daybreak, a barrage of enemy shellfire rained down upon the Wiltshires. The battalion's war diary noted the shelling " ... was as bad as the worst it had received in Normandy."
Attacker: German (Panzer-Division 116)
