Overview:
On the first day of 1943, the Red Army launched Operation DON to liberate the Caucasus. Caught preparing for an orderly withdrawal, the massive attack threw 1. Panzerarmee into headlong retreat. For two weeks, the shattered Wehrmacht slogged west toward the relative safety of Rostov on the Don River. German units began to collect at Proletarskaya, which lay along a main railway line. The town quickly became a target for the Soviet advance. On 15 January, the 51st Army assaulted the beleaguered town and its weary defenders.Attacker: Russian (77th Rifle Division and 63rd Tank Brigade)
