Overview:
The Germans hoped to seize the city of Rostov and the crucial Don River crossings as quickly as possible. Leading the attack on the city were Panzer-Division 13 and SS-Division ''Wiking." Kampfgruppe Dieckmann led the thrust by "Wiking," formed around Bataillon I of SS-Regiment "Germania" and SS-Panzer-Abteilung 5 "Wiking," along with attached artillery and pioneers. After rapidly breaching the first two defense lines, Kampfgruppe Dieckmann found itself confronted by yet another defense line. This third defense line included an anti-tank ditch like the previous two defense lines. Soviet troops manning this defense line were well sheltered in buildings and heavily armed with machine guns, but lacked anti-tank weapons. This allowed German armor to attack the Soviets at close range, while at the same time the pioneers breached the anti-tank ditch to grant the tanks passage through.Attacker: German/German (SS) (Kampfgruppe Dieckmann, SS-Division "Wiking" and SS-Artillerie-Regiment 5 with Bataillon I, Grenadier-Regiment 66, Kradschützed-Bataillon 43 and Panzer-Regiment 4)
