Overview:
The Russian advance into central Finland was aimed at Suomussalmi and then to Oulu to cut Finland in half. The 47th Rifle Corps' mission was first destroy Finnish forces, and then seize Suomussalmi. The 163rd Rifle Division spearheaded the attack. The Finnish defenses in their path were weak in numbers, consisting of only several border guard battalions and independent infantry companies. The Russian 81st Mountain Regiment was the best trained unit from the Leningrad District. The Regiment attacked from the north, demonstrating competent tactics by encircling several Finnish units and forcing others to withdraw. They broke through the Finnish defenses at Linnasalmi on 3 December and continued on towards Suomussalmi.Attacker: Russian (Reinforced elements of the 81st Mountain Regiment, 163rd Rifle Division)
