Overview:

The Russian advance into central Finland was aimed at Suomussalmi and then to Oulu to cut Finland in half. The 47th Rifle Corps' mission was first destroy Finnish forces, and then seize Suomussalmi. The 163rd Rifle Division spearheaded the attack. The Finnish defenses in their path were weak in numbers, consisting of only several border guard battalions and independent infantry companies. The Russian 81st Mountain Regiment was the best trained unit from the Leningrad District. The Regiment attacked from the north, demonstrating competent tactics by encircling several Finnish units and forcing others to withdraw. They broke through the Finnish defenses at Linnasalmi on 3 December and continued on towards Suomussalmi.

In retrospect, I should have blasted the Finnish center with all my forces instead of getting bogged down in the woods in the west.

This after tough sledding for Russians with breaks, CRs and FTRs bogging down the attack due to some hot dice. By this time, only two buildings had been captured, and the defenders situated well. With the Finn’s ability to deploy squads and a shrinking defensive perimeter, the Russians called it a day and headed to the sauna.

Russians will pretty much have to blow through the Finnish defenders to attain victory towards end of scenario. This one will probably go wildly one way or the other depending on the attack success. I like the scenario.
