Overview:
In early May 1943, STAVKA, the Soviet High Command, detected a surge in German forces around the Kursk Salient. A major buildup was underway for a summer offensive projected to launch by July. A massive program of fortification started inside the salient to thwart the German assault, and steps were taken to disrupt the pace of the buildup. STAVKA unleashed Operation RAIL WAR. Partisan forces, reinforced with weapons and Red Army demolition specialists, targeted the rail network and enemy supply depots across German-occupied Byelorussia. One such raid took place in early June at a small trans-shipment yard at Baruski, east of Minsk.
