Overview:
As the German juggernaut approached the outskirts of Boulogne-sur-Mer, the Allies threw a hodgepodge of units in their path in often vain attempts to delay them. South of Outreau, the 720 men of the 2nd Irish Guards-just arrived from England-were ordered to set up a defensive line along a 2-mile front between Manihen and the Liane River. Earlier that day, probing German armor received a bloody nose when British anti-tank guns knocked out two tanks before being overrun. At around 1530 hours, the lead unit of the battalion, Captain Conolly McCausland's 1 Company, had just started to dig when German shelling commenced. The remaining anti-tank gun was moved rearward to avoid this fire. Following this bombardment, at around 1700 hours, the German tanks and infantry assaulted McCausland's position.Attacker: German (Panzer-Division 2)
