Overview:
On 17 May, Merrill's Marauders, weary and sick from a 65 mile trek, attacked Myitkyina airfield along with elements of two Chinese infantry regiments. They quickly overran the airfield and the western sections of the town. Subsequent attacks, however, failed to clear the rest of the town, which was garrisoned by significant numbers of well-supplied Japanese troops under General Mizukami, who was steadily receiving reinforcements. In a final attempt to close the ring on Myitkyina, the remnants of Merrill's 3rd Battalion were launched against the village of Charpate to the north of town.Attacker: American (3rd Battalion, 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional) "Merrill's Marauders")
Defender: Japanese (1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment)

2025-07-08 | (D) Paul Franklin-Bihary | vs | Steven Richard | Japanese win | This scenario is super tough for the Americans. The onslaught of reinforcements led to a Banzai wipeout of US troops that made the task of taking buildings near impossible. This one felt like there may be only one strategy for the US to win, therefore less fun in terms of replay or unique approaches. Recommend using balancing to make it more playable for the US.

2021-10-29 | (D) Tony Fermendzin | vs | Gabe | Japanese win (VASL Log) | The Americans were able to overrun most of the village by turn 3, but were worn down in the process. The Japanese reinforcements then came on and went on a Banzai tear completely wiping out the marauder's right flank, leaving the Americans with too few units to hold the buildings that they had taken. The Japanese were able to take back enough buildings on the last turn to win the game. This one seems really tough on the Americans, who have only four wins on Scenario Archive/Roar as compared to 12 Japanese wins. The marauders start strong but wear down quickly (ELR 2), and their disadvantages in CC (treated as CX) really plays into the Japanese strength. It did not help that the Japanese made just about every CC roll that they needed!
2020-09-20 | (A) Eric Topp | vs | Mark Dennehy | American win | American balance was in play as this scenario is *very* pro-Japanese. Japanese had poor dice (two MC boxcars) early on. With only one Japanese leader left on turn 6, they could only launch one Banzai to retake the VC buildings. They came very close to winning with the CX penalty hurting the US CC rolls. |
