At dawn on 7 August, the Americans in St. Barthelemy were aware of German armor, masked by a heavy mist that had descended overnight, maneuvering in front of their positions. They were also aware the Germans had assaulted the village of le Mesnil-Tove four miles behind the American position. The platoons of Able Company in the village lacked bazookas and included many inexperienced men.
