Overview:
In the region of Tunisia known as the Eastern Dorsal, the hamlet of Station de Sened had already been attacked, captured, lost, and attacked again by American forces. On 1 February it fell to the Americans for a second time as part of a drive toward Maknassy, 20 miles to the east. Col. Robert V. Maraist, leading a composite force called Combat Command D, was implored by II Corps’ Commander Fredenhall to “use your tanks and shove” in order to establish a position several miles east of Station de Sened in preparation for the final drive on Maknassy. The attack the next morning made rapid progress until Stukas arrived to cool the ardor of Maraist’s force. A German counterattack that afternoon caused some disruption, but a breakthrough by five German tanks was contained by American armor.
