Overview:
As part of a larger offensive designed to drive Japanese forces away from the Matanikau valley, two battalions from the 5th Marines and elements of the 1st Raider Battalion attacked west from the Lunga perimeter on October 7, forcing an infantry company from the Japanese 2nd Division into a pocket on the east side of the Matanikau, where it formed a strongpoint. Rainy conditions on October 8 slowed the pace of the Marines operation, and that evening, as night began to fall, the remaining Japanese trapped on the east side of the Matanikau made one final push to get across the river and break out to the west.Attacker: Japanese (3rd Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment)
