Introduction:
Saint-Lô was to the Americans, as Caen was to the British, its importance was crucial to the Allies break out from the Normandy beachhead. However, by mid-July the city’s importance was given added value as the gateway into the Cotentin peninsula for the upcoming Operation COBRA.
