Overview:

The Finns stopped the Russian invasion in December and early January, inflicting grievous casualties. Stalin the appointed Marshal Timoshenko to take over the Russian Army fighting against Finland. Russian military leaders changed their tactics. Tanks would now only attack supported by infantry on foot, towed in armored sledges, or in the rare case of riders. This led to the formation of Infantry-Tank teams which would systematically destroy obstacles and bunkers. The first ten days of February saw record low temperatures below -20 Celsius which froze marshes. During this time, the Russians fired over 2.75 million artillery rounds and the Red Air Force conducted numerous daily bombing sorties. It was now time for a coordinated attack.
