Overview:
Having suffered severely from a German counterattack on 11 July, 1st Battalion, 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division had been unable to participate effectively in the Division's attack towards St. Lô that day. Four days later, the Regiment's other two Battalions were exhausted from their attacks, and now it was the turn of the Battalion commanded by Major Glover S. Johns, Jr. While Company C engaged on the right flank, Lieutenant Peter Kordiyak's Company B, attacking on the left flank, faced a ravine to cross on the other side of which the Germans defended from dug-in positions in a large, wooded area. With Division commander General Charles Gerhardt demanding immediate results from the 115th commander, Colonel Godwin Ordway, Jr., Johns was ordered to attack over open ground.Attacker: American (Company B, 1st Battalion, 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division)
