Overview:
The Belgian volunteers in the German Army, known as the 5th SS Freivilligen-Sturmbrigade "Wallonien", was assigned to the tip of the Korsun-Cherkassy salient. After holding the line for several weeks, they decided to rid themselves of some of the annoying raids from the Cherkassy forest. During the night, elements of two companies and a squad of pioneers with flamethrowers snuck through snow covered wet marshlands to attack infantry and partisans in Irdyn.
