Overview:
South of Caen, Canadian and British forces gathered as part of Operation TOTALIZE in the village of Saint-Aignan-de-Cramesnil for an incoming aerial bombardment that would precede their assault to the south. SS-Standartenführer Kurt Meyer ordered an immediate pre-emptive attack. Reinforced by additional armor and infantry, German tank commander, SS-Hauptsturmführer Michael Wittman, also known as the "Black Baron" led a group of Tigers from schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 101 towards Saint-Aignan-de-Cramesnil. If they were able to surprise the Allies, they might be able to protect their reserve positions from being compromised and prevent Commonwealth forces from linking up with the northwesterly advance of American forces from Argentan and Falaise.
