Overview:
Once Italy was invaded on 3 September and the armistice signed, the liberation of Corsica began with an uprising ordered by the local Resistance. Initially, Allied High Command considered this a potential distraction given the invasion of Italy, but once it had been revealed how many German troops were in Corsica-and that many Italian army units under a somewhat reticent General Giovanni Magli were defecting en masse-Operation Vesuvius was approved. This guaranteed that more arms would be shipped to the French resistance via submarine even as German units retreating from Sicily and mainland Italy were funneling from southern Corsica to the northern port of Bastia. By the time the armistice was made public on 9 September the Resistance, along with the Italian Cremona and Friuli Infantry Divisions, were ready to engage in combat with the German SS-Sturmbrigade "Reichsführer" moving north.Attacker: German (SS) (SS-Sturmbrigade "Reichsführer" and assault guns of Panzergrenadier-Division 90)
