Overview:

Before dawn the Japanese had cut the "tail" of the island in two and had taken up positions in and around Battery Denver, an abandoned AA gun position just west of Kindley Airfield. They setup a .50 caliber heavy machinegun with supporting infantry to cover the flanks while tanks and artillery were still being brought ashore down on the beach. Between 0200 and 0400 hours, the Americans tried three times to dislodge the Japanese from Battery Denver. Each time they were forced to withdraw because the fire from the .50 caliber weapon was so intense. At 0600 the Americans would make one final attempt.
