Overview:
The 101st Airborne gained fame as “the battered bastards of Bastogne”. Their ordeal overshadowed the tenacious defense of other units in the sector. William Desobry, a battalion commander in the 10th Armored Division, led such a defense. As the Ardennes offensive gathered steam, Team Desobry deployed at Noville on 18 December. Depleted armoured infantry platoons backed by sections of Sherman tanks manned outposts overlooking vital roads from Bourcy, Houffalize, and Vaux. Desobry’s men watched through the night as panicked troops of the 9th Armored and 28th Infantry Divisions fled past. As unnerving as the procession of routed troops was, the tension increased even more the next morning when the stream of panicked G.I.s abruptly dried up.Attacker: German (Panzer Division 2)
