Overview:
The Russian 11th Guards Army began its attack on Festung Königsberg on 6 April and penetrated its outer defensive belt that same day. By the morning of the 8th, the Russians had driven through the second belt of forts and mines and were closing in on the city center. Elements of the 11th Guards formed special assault groups of infantry and engineers with flamethrowers supported by ISU-152 self-propelled guns. The Russian attack slowed as it neared the main railroad station.
