Overview:

The obvious invasion sites on Bougainville were avoided in favor of a landing around Cape Torokina in Empress Augusta Bay. The usual prolonged naval bombardment was rejected in order to maximize the element of surprise. At 0710 the first wave of LCVPs, carrying some 7500 Marines began the 5000-yard run to shore. Opposing them was a single reinforced company of the Japanese 6th Infantry Division. After recovering from their initial shock, the Japanese calmly donned their best uniforms and prepared to fight to the death. . .
Attacker: American (USMC) (Companies A & C, 3rd Marine Regiment / 2nd Marine Raider Battalion)

2020-11-11(A) Dave Mareske vs Dan Best American (USMC) winThis was my first beach landing attempt and all went pretty well. The armored landing craft are fairly invulnerable to anything the Japanese have. Most of the Marines landed on the north beach, moved inland and then south. We called the game about half way through seeing no path for the Japanese to maintain a level of firepower on the ocean. Learned alot!
2020-06-04(D) Jeff B vs Scott Sherer American (USMC) win13.25 hrsThe first couple turns just saw the Americans make their way to the beach. I really had nothing to stop him except one gun, and I was not about to reveal it's position for the chance of maybe knocking out one LC. I figured that keeping this hidden was about the only chance I had at victory. He ended up losing a LC to Heavy Surf. His planes didn't do much other than reveal a few hidden positions. The attack came about equally in the north and south. I had left the north completely empty, so these men landed unopposed on Turn 3. I figured it would take him a good amount of time to cross all the way over to the south, which is where most of my men were setup, and this would not be unopposed as I had a fair force in the middle to prevent this. What I really underestimated were the MGs on his LC. I also made probably a fatal mistake by not having a leader in the south whose sole purpose would be to rally my eventual brokies. Turn 4 saw his men in the south unload and take many expected casualties, but it was not nearly enough as he managed to gain a toehold on the Hinterland. Turns 5-6 saw more heavy casualties on each side as we battled for position in the south, but I just didn't have enough troops, nor enough FP to stand up to him. Once I got evicted from the beach there was no way I would be able to reclaim that ground, even with tunnels. Neither one of us calculated where we stood, as we thought it would be more exciting to just tabulate the score at the end, but I suspected my chances were slim and I was right. When he knocked me out of the center in the last couple turns I figured my chances were almost nil. Final score (at best) was 13VP for me after deducting all his men inland. No surprise, Scott seemed to like this one a lot more than I did. I thought it was a bit too static of a defense with limited options.
2020-06-04(A) Scott Sherer vs Jeff B American (USMC) win
2020-04-06(D) Michael Rodgers vs Magnus Rimvall American (USMC) winOur match went to the last turn, when the Japanese losses finally made it impossible to win. There were about ten American squad equivalents in the hinterland. The Japanese must weigh the HIP advantage against giving up the +1 deir lip cover to the landing Americans. The Japanese should forget about the island.
2016-12-11(A) Martí Cabré vs Txema Mainez American (USMC) winDuplicate of Gung Ho! game.
