Overview:
Under threat of being removed from command, General Graziani kicked off an offensive intended to capture Alexandria. The drive of his 10th Army consisted of four infantry divisions, two motorized regiments, an armored group, and a lightly armored reconnaissance battalion. Commanded by General Bergonzoli, Italian forward elements were closely monitored by the British covering force. The advance moved out in two columns, one along the coast road through Sollum, the other through the desert south of the escarpment that parallels the coast. Heavy Italian shelling heralded the coastal column's progress. When the dust cleared, the British saw a phalanx of Italian motorcycles, tanks, and other vehicles drawn up before them.Attacker: British (Gott's Motorized Support Group, including Recon Troop of D Squadron, 11th Hussars)
