Overview:

The fate of Axis soldiers was sealed by an order emanating from the Fuhrerbunker in Rastenburg: β€œTo the Army Group Afrika – The German people expect you to fight to the last bullet.” One place where such an effort was still taking place was along the Miliana River. Here, tattered remnants of the 19th FlaK Division, a handful of soldiers from the former Ramcke Parachute Brigade and a few 88mm guns held out on the Jebel Achkel, north of Mateur. Their foes, the Gurkhas of the 4th Indian Division, were battle trained, well-rested, and abundantly supplied. No matter the advantages, the fabled 88mm gun was still a dangerous anti-personnel weapon.

2022-04-05(D) Jeff B vs Scott Sherer German win2.5 hrsA very light-on-the-rules DTO scenario. In fact, without any vehicles, I hesitate to even call it one at all. If it wasn't for F.5 and no rout terrain it really wouldn't be. The Germans have very little room to hide, so I setup most of my men in a reverse slope defense. This allowed the Gurkhas a fairly free approach to my hill, of which they had to take two of the four Level 2 hexes. But this one really comes down to who can get smoke first. In our game that was me, enshrouding the British mortar on Turn 1. This would be the last action my mortar would have though, as British advance fire broke my crew. Thankfully for me my sniper pegged the opposing British crew, and breaking in the desert is like breaking at night - it's rough to come back. There were no actual casualties until Turn 3 though, when the Brits finally got brave enough to try and storm the hill. Despite their 8 ML, they were sitting ducks for all the heavy German muscle that had a bead on them. Of their seven units that crossed the threshold (three of whom were full squads), only two squads were left standing going into Turn 4 after the German HMG, MMG, 8-1 led LMG, and 88L got through with them. When the German sniper nailed one of them and another was KIA the Brits called it a day.
