C Company, 740th Tank Battalion, under Captain James Berry, collected a motley group of Shermans as well as an M36 90mm-gunned tank destroyer from an ordnance depot. By noon of the 19th, Berry's tanks were running, fueled and "ammoed up", and was falling back after its sister battalion had been roughly handled by Peiper that morning. Moving up to do battle with Peiper's panzers, the 740th passed by the 1/119th's Regimental command post.
