Overview:
The German High Command pulled the exhausted Hungarian forces back in Barbarossa and placed them in reserve to defend a 200km length of the Dniester River. They were widely dispersed in strong points supplemented with a line of sentry posts. The Soviets were continually raiding across the river, usually in battalion strength, and the Hungarians were hard-pressed to defeat these raiders. In fact, a multi-battalion attack on 5 September evicted the two Hungarian battalion defending Zaporohze Island.
