Overview:
For three weeks the Americans battled through tough hill top defense, often fighting man to man in trenches, foxholes and blasting defenders out of strong caves, taking casualties every step of the way. One of the most fiercely contested positions was known as Norton’s Knob. On the 21st, the 1st Battalion stormed the crest of the hill, surprising the defenders and for 24 hours, the two sides attacked and counterattacked the summit. The Americans who had been lacking artillery support so far in the campaign, found two 90,, AA guns idle and used them to devastating effect on the Japanese bunkers and caves.
