Overview:

The leading elements of the elite 2nd "Sendai" Division had arrived on Guadalcanal with same orders as their predecessors -- eliminate the Marine beachhead. With ample manpower, Japanese commanders planned to attack the perimeter from the west and the south. The main effort would be from the south, with the western attack being a diversion. Unlike previous attacks, the Sendai Division would be supported by a company of tanks.
Attacker: Japanese (II Battalion, 4th Regiment and 1st Independent Tank Company)
Defender: American (USMC) (I Company, 1st Marines and B Battery, 1st Special Weapons Battalion)

2024-10-05(D) Vic Lauterbach vs JM Japanese winThis night PTO clash is intense. Our first game saw my Marines get waxed. After three turns there were two Type 97s and four MMC through the wire and on the beach east of hex row 10, my artillery observer was dead, and the pillbox occupants were locked in melee. Jim suggested we try again with the US balance after I improved my defensive setup. We did, and it went better, but the end result was still a Japanese victory (34 VP east of effluent/river). Counter density is very high. (Playing it on a VASL map with large hexes would help.) Jim: There's no need for a clever attack plan. It's charge forward, but I did send one platoon at Vic's left flank in a swimming attack! The first time, Vic had terrible star shell drs and a lucky PFh shot got a fatal casualty MC on the 8-0 with the phone, a loss that doomed the defense. The second game was closer but the 37LLs can't do much if (when) they run out of cannister. This one is very tough on the Marines; it's interesting but not really fun. US needs lots of low IFT/OBA DRs to have any chance.
