Overview:

In the spring of 1944, with the German retreat, the Soviet partisan struggle against the invaders was drawing to a close. Both sides had evolved since 1941. The former were better equipped and better led, operating almost like detached Red Army units, often with the support of special forces. Opposite them, the Germans deployed more effective means but had lost none of their brutality. Thus, in early May, the 9th SS Panzer Division "Hohenstaufen" committed its reconnaissance group against the "Naumov Gang", named after a notorious partisan leader, on the Ukrainian-Polish border, perhaps following information obtained from Ukrainian nationalists. The SS received support from Armored Train #63, which had two light tanks to accompany its infantry detachment. The Germans' objective was, quite literally, to encircle the enemy and annihilate them.
