Overview:

While the outcome of the Second World War was no longer in doubt, there were towns in Germany that nonetheless offered more than token resistance against the advancing Allied armies. One such town was Aschaffenburg, located on the east bank of a bend in the Main River, some 40 miles from Frankfurt. Here, a collection of units of varying skill and experience under the command of World War I veteran Maj. Emil Lamberth – a task force dubbed Kampfkommando Aschaffenburg by no less a figure than the Führer himself – organized a stout defense, made all the more formidable by the natural barrier of the river.
