Overview:

Before the sun cleared the horizon the Canadians launched their attack on the village of Carpiquet. The Queen's Own Rifles advanced alongside the North Shore Regiment, supported by the armor of the Fort Garry Horse. The Régiment de la Chaudière attacked on their right flank toward the airfield. All were met by determined elements of SS-Panzer-Division 12 "Hitlerjugend," now battle-hardened after four weeks of near-continuous combat. Division commander SS-Standartenführer Kurt ("Panzermeyer") Meyer had prepared the ground well ahead of the battle, thanks to German intelligence. The struggle for the village was to prove deadly for those who fought it and strategically decisive for the larger battle around Caen.
Attacker: Canadian (North Shore Regiment, Queen's Own Rifles of Canada Regiment, 8th Infantry Brigade, Canadian 3rd Division and 10th Armoured Regiment (Fort Garry Horse))
Defender: German (SS) (Bataillon I, SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment 26, SS-Panzer-Division 12 "Hitlerjugend")
