Overview:

In its drive to retake Seoul, the 1st Marine Division would first have to secure the industrial area of Yongdungpo, which lay, to the south, on the opposite bank of the Han River from the capital city. In the late afternoon of 21 September, A Company 1st Battalion under the command of Captain Robert H. Barrow, the future 27th Commandant of the U.S.M.C., managed to maneuver his company deep into the industrial district of Yongdung-po, cutting the district nearly in two, and netting a small band of prisoners in the process, inexplicably the enemy had left this sector of their line practically undefended. As the sun began to set, Barrow selected a large dry rice paddy, surrounded by a high earthen dike, and into which the Marines burrowed into the side banks of for added protection, as his battle position for the upcoming night.
