Overview:

During the early spring of 1944, there were menacing signs of a large Soviet build-up along the previously-quiet sector of the Finnish main front extending from Lake Ladoga through reoccupied Karelia. In the barren and frozen wasteland north of Kiestinki near Shapkozero, elements of a volunteer Norwegian SS ski battalion operating with reconnaissance units from SS-Gebirgs-Division 6 "Nord" engaged in aggressive patrolling all along the front. In an effort to predict the location and timing of the coming Soviet offensive, elite ski-trained units penetrated deep behind the lines of the Soviet 26th Army. Less than a week before the opening act of the Soviet Karelian offensive, a lo.ng-range ski patrol of Germans and Norwegians slipped silently through the lines with the objective of bringing back a "tongue" for interrogation.
