Overview:
General Leclerc's 2nd Armored Division was attacking the Colmar Pocket. Leclerc successfully crossed the Ill River, but had sustained heavy causalities in the process. The French were now moving toward Elsenheim where Generalmajor Wilhelm Bleckwenn, commanding the 708th Volksgrenadier (VGD), had established strong battle positions in the woods around the town. Seeking a way to bypass these defenses, Leclerc sent Lieutenant Colonel Simon's 8e Regiment de Chasseurs d'Afrique with it's M-10 tank-destroyers to clear the Illhausern-Elsenheim road and find a way to bypass the Germans, Leading this effort was 2nd Platoon's M-10 tank destroyer, Porc-Épic (translated from French is "Porcupine") commanded by MDL Marc Samin. Traveling on the Rte. d'Elsenheim, Porc-Épic crossed Reinbrunnen creek and emerged from the woods about a mile from Illhauesern.Attacker: Free French (Régiment de Marche du Tchad and 2e Peloton, 3eEscadron, 8e Regiment de Chasseurs d'Afrique, 2e Division Blindée)
