Overview:
Located on the south-eastern tip of Papua, Milne Bay was selected as the location for an Allied base including three airstrips. However, in doing so the base became a target for the Japanese as a potentially valuable base of their own. On the night of 25 August 1942, 2,000 Japanese Marines of the Kure 5 SNLF landed to capture the airfields but were dropped off 11 kilometers from their planned landing zone, and fighting over the next few days telegraphed their intentions to the Allied Commanders,Attacker: Japanese (Kure 5 SNLF and 362 Naval Pioneer Unit)
