Overview:

The 10th Mountain Division's 3rd Battalion, 86th Mountain Infantry Regiment captured Mount della Torraccia on 24 February. Upon securing the heights, the battalion began placing defensive positions in preparation for the expected German counterattack. Due to the extended frontage, all of the 3rd Battalions Infantry wre place online, each of the three rifle (I, K and L) companies were reinforced by suppory elements from its Mountain Weapons (M) Company. In the afternoon, the Americans captured the nearby village of Felicari containing a German artillery observation post. Immediately following the 10th Mountain Division's capture of Mount della Torraccia, the Germans began their preparations for a counterattack, assembling elements from the 1044th Grenadier Regiment, the 114th Reconnaissance Battalion, and the Hochgebrigsjäger Lehr-Batallion Mittenwald. Probing efforts on Mount della Torraccia and several attempts to recapture Felcari were made during the afternoon. At 2200 the main German assault commenced with an extended artillery barrage.
