Overview:
Prior to the German invasion, the Galatas/Prison Valley area was expected to be relatively quiet. Consequently, it was mainly defended by ill-equipped, non-infantry soldiers (gunners with no artillery and drivers without trucks) from the New Zealand Division who had been hastily evacuated from Greece some three weeks prior to the invasion. In particular, Pink Hill was the gateway to the Galatas Heights, offering effective control of the surrounding area and the encirclement of the NZ 5th Brigade stationed further to the west at Maleme. Over the six days from Tuesday 20 May to Sunday 25 May 1941, the paratroopers of the Fallschrimjäger-Regiment.3, from their base in the Agia Prison, launched a series of sustained attacks on Pink Hill.Attacker: German (Gebirsjäger Regiment 100 and Fallschrimjäger-Regiment.3)
