Overview:
In the summer of 1944, as the Germans retreated across Italy, the Partisan Division "Modena", led by Captain "Armando" had played a key role in the creation of a large partisan controlled area behind the German held Gothic Line. This "Fascist-Free" zone was called "Republica of Montefiorino". The Allies reinforced the 5,000 man Division by parachuting in weapons and ammunition. As a result, the Partisans were able to threaten the enemy supply lines during June and July. A unit of Russians formed from former POWs began to distinguish itself for its bravery. The Germans, after several failed attempts to resolve this situation by negotiation, decided they would have to commit forces to try and wipe the "Repubblica of Montefiorino" from the map. The Germans with a mixed force of 8,000 men, with a combination of SS, Luftwaffe, Wehrmacht troops and Italians Fascists attacked simultaneously from three different directions, supported by artillery, armoured cars and flamethrowers.Attacker: German (SS) / Italian (III./SS-Polizei-Regiment 12, G.N.R.)
