Overview:

The Muselmanen-Division (Muslim Division) was the first ethnic SS-division, consisting mostly of Bosnian Muslims, plus large groups of Catholic Croats, and Volksdeutsche (ethnic German Yugoslavs). The unit was sent to southern France for training in 1943. Partisan sympathizers, both Bosnian and Croat, had purposely 'volunteered' in order to sow chaos from within, and began to form their conspiracy to mutiny. Just after midnight on the 17th , these junior officers acted. Surprise was complete, with senior German officers arrested and, after a summary "trial", executed, including the battalion commander. But one officer, unit physician Dr. Willfried Schweiger, was released, and the unit Imam, Halim Malkoc, had not been included in the conspiracy. These men convinced the majority of the confused enlisted men to turn on the mutineers, which at its core numbered a couple hundred. With their plans falling apart, the mutineers tried to break out of encirclement in the hopes of joining the Marquis.
