Overview:

Even with most off the major buildings in the Hospital/University complex now under their control, the troopers of 5th Cavalry were having an extremely difficult time in eliminating the remaining isolated pockets of Japanese from the area. It seemed as if every small building, workshop, house, dormitory, and store was defended by marines and sailors armed with automatic weapons, mortars, and explosives. The push north into the South Port area of the city could not begin until the Hospital/University complex was secured. The Japanese would fight for these locations to the death.
Attacker: American (5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division and 44th Tank Battalion)
Defender: Japanese (Central Force Headquarters Battalion and 5th Naval Battalion)

2022-10-26(A) Andy Bagley vs Neil Brunger American winVery exciting scenario, and very close. At first it looked as though American firepower would overwhelm the Japanese, even though the air OBA observer was shot down early on. However, the Japanese, aided by their Rocket battery, fought the Americans to a standstill on the eastern side of the map, and my progress in the west was slow. Then just as the Japanese were being slowly forced out of the University Administration building, one of his squads with a leader, protected by plentiful smoke, got round the back of my lines and started recapturing buildings I had previously taken! It looked touch and go as I hurried to plug the breach, finally catching them with a KIA result as they crossed open ground to take more buildings. With no chance of stopping the Americans reaching their VC target, my opponent conceded at the end of turn 6.
A big scenario - took us about 9 hours over two VASL sessions - but well worth playing.
