2022-10-06 | (D) Andy Goldin | vs | Stephen Worrel | German win | This scenario is tough on the Americans. Stephen and I took turns playing the Americans and for both of us, the game was basically over by Turn 6. I think the scenario is designed so the at-start US forces mass at a small sector of the German line, punch a hole in it, and rush the reinforcements through the gap to one of the objectives. In our two playings of the scenario, the Americans didn't get more than six hexes from the start line. OBA is hard to use in the bocage due to limited LOS. American leadership is poor and insufficient quantity. Although the at-start forces have three leaders, one is going to be dedicated to calling fire with OBA, leaving only two leaders for 11 squads. The reinforcements are even worse off, having only two leaders for 12 squad equivalents. Even if the aforementioned American strategy is successful, the German player can shift his unengaged forces or reinforcements to plug a hole. This requires the American to reset for another deliberate attack to create another breach to which the German can respond, and so on. Provided the German player doesn't throw away his precious Fallschrimjager, he can cover enough of the board to prevent Americans from exercising freedom of movement. Meanwhile, the Germans have a lot of flexibility with their at-start forces as they get to buy 18 purchase points worth of pillboxes, concealment, mines, and so on. And did I mention the Germans get three 81mm mortars? I chose two pillboxes with minefields covering their blind spots. Although Stephen did take both pillboxes from me, it took him half the game to do it. So yes, this is tough on the Americans indeed. | ||
