Overview:

As the First Team blasted its way to the Yalu River and the Chinese border in late October, many of the GIs and Officers believed they might be home in time for Christmas. At the same time, however, units of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (CPVA)-using excellent discipline and moving only at night to avoid reconnaissance-crossed the Manchurian border into North Korea. The 8th Cavalry Regiment (now under Colonel Hal Edson) was poised as the tip of the spear of the United Nations Command and pushed into North Korea near the village of Unsan, only 65 miles from the Manchurian frontier. Major General Charles Willoughby, MacArthur's Chief of Staff for Intelligence, assured the Eighth Army Commanders that the Chinese troops beginning to attack ROK units near the border were nothing but small numbers of volunteers, and that Chairman Mao would not commit regular forces to intervene. On the evening of 1 November, with news that they were hemmed in on three sides, Edson and the 8th Cavalry Regiment faced proof that this time Willoughby was wrong.
