Overview:

Lieutenant General Kim Ung and his KPA I Corps were two weeks behind schedule regarding "Operation Order 121"-to take Taegu and Pusan by 6 August. With Eighth Army getting stronger by the day in its defensive positions behind the Naktong, Ung’s situation had become more urgent. The new main axis of attack would be from the south into the area around the town of Waegwan, with its two excellent bridges and numerous shallow fording sites. The KPA 3rd and 10th Divisions crossed the Naktong at several points in the early hours of 15 August and moved towards Eighth Army HQ at Taegu, hoping to deliver a knockout blow. At the farthest end of the flank, next to the ROK 1st Division, stood Lt. Colonel Paul T. Clifford's 2nd Battalion, which had set up mortar positions overlooking the river crossings from Hill 303, the first significant terrain feature east of the Naktong. With the First Team having·to defend a front almost ten miles long, Ung was able to find a place to cross in strength.

2024-09-20(A) Indy Lagu vs Rob Oler American winAn exercise in frustration for me. As the North Koreans,
you are attacking uphill against dug in Americans who have
3 81mm MTRs and you have almost zero cover. As such,
I never thought I had much of a chance.

As others have opined, this feels tough on the N Koreans.

I'm willing to bet that I missed something as Pete Shelling's
designs aren't typically dependent upon a trick.

Rob would rate this an 8. I could not.

To be sure, there is a lot of replayabilty. I'm not sure I'd
play this one again.

2022-05-26(A) James Holt vs Eric Shipley American winThis week my regular VASL opponent, Eric, and I finished up AP182 Sabres Crossed from the new Action Pack 17. Many of the scenarios in that pack intrigued me because of the setting (Korea) and the fact that there is a higher proportion of scenarios with combined arms than in the core FW module (which I liked as well). That being said, I took the North Koreans because of the victory condition challenge of taking the three 81mm mortars AND defending the two bridges. Lots of MMCs on each side with cool toys for the Americans. Eric spread out his defense across the width of the ridge and I set up kill stacks for Turn 1 Prep Fire on a few exposed adjacent units - which was somewhat effective. My downfall came in two waves: 1) Never, ever, use the 9-0 political officer to lead an assault uphill towards the emplaced MTR in a foxhole. Just don't do this. His absence was critical later in the game when I had broken units scattered all other the place looking for adult guidance to rally and get back in the fight. 2) Be sure to read the last sentence of C9.2 and the middle sentence of A9.8 (e.g., not everything is as it seems when looking at the US setup)...this was a brilliant move on Eric's part. You've got to deal with the mortars quickly before the US reinforcements come on, and then you have a chance as the North Koreans. I just ran out of bodies and time and then the wave of reinforcements was cleared in hot to the bridge areas. Seeing that unfold I conceded in turn 5. This is a really fun scenario and I'm anxious to try the others in the pack.
2022-02-10(D) Sam Tyson vs Matt Schwoebel American winJust finished this one last week. The North Koreans have to go after the mortars and protect the bridges. Seems like a tough task.
I played the Americans and had one mortar and the short bridge at game end.
