Overview:

With its series of forts and prepared positions, the area around the historic Lorraine city of Metz was to become known as “Fortress Metz” to the U.S. forces fighting in Europe. The first test in the long campaign which was to earn the city its name came in early September with the crossing of the Moselle River just south of the city. With few reinforcements available, the Americans were unable to expand their position and were under almost constant enemy attack. When elements of the 5th Division crossed the Moselle south of Dornot near Arnaville, it was decided that the Dornot bridgehead could be withdrawn without undue hazard to the new crossing. The American engineers used what few boats were available to evacuate the wounded. Unaware of the American withdrawal, the Germans had scheduled an attack for the same evening.
Attacker: German (SS) (Bataillon I, SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 37)
Defender: American (Company I, 3rd Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment, and 204th and 7th Engineer Battalions/2nd Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment and 23rd Armored Infantry Battalion)

2026-08-05(D) Mark Thompson vs Tripp Killin (SS) American winThe Americans sent a decoy group of 100% dummy units to the left and the real units to the right. The tactic worked .... barely. While the decoys did bait and put effectively out of the about 50% of the SS force as well as the armor, the other 50% did manage to skillfully move to decent blocking positions to interdict the Fording-Line and Boat rendezvous crossing on either side of the elevated road. The combination of staged OBA, poor DRs, and American covering fire from the opposite bank made the difference, with the SS conceding in the penultimate turn with 10 CVP but only 3 CVP of Americans still "in-play". A great scenario that warrants considerable thought on set-up and throughout - definitely recommended!
2026-02-26(D) David Garvin vs Nick Faryna American winThis was a razor's edge. At the end, the NVR dropped to 2. This was just enough to keep my final SMC stuck on the far side to reach a boat and cross the river. That SMC? Had he been eliminated, that would have won the game for the Germans. TIGHT scenario. Highly recommended.
2023-09-22(A) Todd Cox vs American winGermans couldn't quite catch up and stop the Americans from crossing the river.
2018-02-02(D) Martí Cabré vs Francisco Belmonte DrawAn interesting scenario with night, boats, river crossing and prepared OBA. It's really not that hard. NVR dropped to 0 so we could almost not fire at anyone, starshells fell everywhere except where they were intended and it was a mess. We stopped the scenario after realizing we had been ignoring the boats SSR and PP limitation, but it was a tight end.
