Overview:

During late July 1943, the Allied 15th Army Group drove the Italian and German forces into Sicily's northeast corner. The Axis fought sporadic delaying actions as they withdrew back to prepared defensive positions. As August began, the U.S. 1st Infantry Division was tasked to take the village of Troina in the center of the Etna Line. Several attempts to assault Troina directly along Highway 120 by the 39th and 16th Infantry Regiment on 1 and 2 August were repulsed by Kampfgruppe Fullreide, 15th Panzergrenadier Division. On 3 August, the 39th Regiment renewed its assault, supported by a flanking movement conducted by the 26th Infantry Regiment from the northwest. One battalion from the 26th Regiment quickly reached its objective, Mount Basilio, where it was joined by a second battalion. German counterattacks cut the battalions off from the rest of the division. On 5 August, the Germans attempted an assault by dismounted panzergrenadiers.
