Overview:

On the morning of the 23 LtCol Murray, in command of the 5th Marines, ordered the 1st Battalion KMC to renew its attack to secure the ridgeline of which Hill 65 was a part. Once again the KMC met sustained fire and were stopped in their tracks. Seeing that the KMC was not going to be able to succeed, Murray, towards mid-afternoon, committed his reserve. D and F Companies of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines were ordered to pass through the KMC and renew the attack on the objective, which as it turned out was the enemy's main line of resistance. Meanwhile, it was also vital that what remained of the 1st Battalion KMC be safely recovered so that it could be reconstituted and reformed as the regimental reserve, now that the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, which had been the reserve, had been committed to battle.
