Overview:

In the sector of the Russian 1st and 3rd Guards Armies the Axis defensive lines on the Don and the Chir Rivers had been shattered. As Russian mobile formations poured through the line and into Axis rear areas, various formations were cut off. The Romanian 7th Infantry Division was one of these. Since the opening of the LITTLE SATURN offensive this division had been steadily driven back. As the front lines evaporated on December 19th, the 1st Guards Mechanized Brigade and 197th Rifle Division encircled the Romanian Division at the town of Kruzhilin. The next day the Russians launched concentric attacks on the surrounded Romanians.

2021-08-24(D) Jeff B vs Joe Arthur Romanian win4 hrsRussians made what I consider to be a tactical blunder by coming in all west on both fronts. Rather than try and drag those heavy weapons to the battle, they would've been much better served positioning themselves to help prevent Romanian repositioning. Russians survived a sneaky 2-2 stack move shot on Turn 1, otherwise it was pretty quiet. Turn 2 was absolutely brutal however, losing 3.5 squads and a tank to a CH from the big mortar. I'm guessing at least 2/3 of my IFT rolls throughout the game were either a 3, 4, or 5. When another tank was taken out with a MOL, the 9-1 by a sniper, and the hot Romanian dice continued to rain down, the Russian called it a day on Turn 3. With only an extra 458 and LMG, the reissue probably didn't do enough to address the imbalance.
