Overview:
At 0700 hours during the morning of 4 September the old German torpedo boat T196 opened fire on Westerplatte from a distance of 2,800 meters. It plastered the defenses, firing 65 of it 102mm shells at the ammunition shelters. These failed to explode, having been emptied before the war. Another German naval asset got into the fray from the seawards side: the auxiliary boat Von der Groeben fired its 105mm gun. The Germans also hurled artillery concentrations at the defenses, the shells coming over from the direction of Weichselmunde and Brosen.
