Overview:
Lead elements of the 507th PIR crossed the river Rhine at around 0950 and made the first combat jump in the history of the 17th Airborne Division. Colonel Edson Raff gathered his staff and available men after landing. It took some time before he realized they had landed 3 km northwest of their assigned drop zone. Without delay, he personally organized his troops and moved out toward their original target, Castle Diersfordt, which would be the designated command post for the 507th. On the way there, Raff’s formation suddenly ran into a German artillery position. The heavy guns were shelling the Allied bridgehead on the riverbanks and were a serious threat to the British troops there. Without hesitation, Raff ordered his men at attack the artillery position, which was protected by anti-aircraft guns – among them and 88 – MG nests, and various fortifications.Attacker: American (507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division)
Defender: German (Infanterie-Division 84 and Artillery Gun Group)

| 2026-06-21 | (A) Eric Partizan Eric | vs | John Knowles | German win (VASL Log) | VASL League 2026 - Round 3 A complete disaster for my US guys. A 10-2 who desserves the martial court. 20 Germans VP for 0 US at game turn 3. | ||
| 2025-03-09 | (A) Vic Lauterbach | vs | Jim M. | American win | I drew Raff's paratroopers in this Operation Varsity clash and sent 1 platoon into the sV1 woods to clear out what I suspected were dummies then take building sW4. The rest of my force went for the sEE9 woods and the German VC guns. My plan worked well, and I ended with both guns disabled and a 15 to 7.5 CVP advantage. Closing on the Germans was the key, and my 7-ML squads passed most of their MCs. Jim: I set up to block a left board edge approach and defend the right board edge. Trying to stop the 747s from crossing the paved road didn't work because I lost the battle in for the sEE9 woods. US firepower was too much, but also, I misplaced the 20L and 88L in woods. Instead of taking crushing PB shots at 747s, the crews died in CC after a few ineffective shots. I'd opt for board u OG hexes next time. And some 447s should fall back immediately to the German VC guns' hexes. Moderately fun game anyway. | ||

| 2024-07-07 | (A) Michael Augustine | vs | Larry Rohlfing | American win | The Germans conceded at the end of Turn 3. The German rolled my SAN 6 times and I rolled a deadly 1 four times. Fortunate direction got the US sniper on the German 105 guns on the first turn, and wiped out the two German crews by the end of Turn 2. With no more opportunity to gain VP by firing the cannons, the 88 missing shots, and Americans knocking out the flak gun, it was game over. A very cheesy lucky win for my Americans. |
