Overview:

In mid-1944, the Germans were well aware of the possibility of a separate peace between Finland and the Soviet Union. One step taken as such an eventuality in mind was the planning of an amphibious operation Tanne Ost, targeting Suursaari Island. Marine-Artillerie-Abteilung 531 formed the backbone of the assault force. At midnight on 14 September the Germans demanded that the island’s Finnish garrison surrender. The Finnish commander, Lieutenant Colonel Miettinen, refused. The order to attack was given.

2023-05-14(A) Ron Garcia vs Darryl M. German winNice change of pace scenario. The Germans can decide to take an all land route, an all sea route, or a combination of both. Since amphibious landings are so rare (really, a river crossing using assault boats), unless my friend stacked the ocean border with troops, I was going all in on the ocean crossing.

Thinking I would take the land route, my friend set up for a southern assault. He placed wire in the two woods clumps in the north and the board join line, but curiously left the center clump open. I figured the hidden guns must be there or a hex back from there. Since the way was clear for my men to charge the center woods, I did exactly that.

I sent everybody except two HS (placed on the southern land route) to the ocean's edge scouting out the brush for hidden guns. Turns out the two open woods hexes did have the hidden guns, but my friend didn't count on how hard it is to hit boats in the water. I landed, killed both crews in CC and started to hunker down (the Germans win by holding 3+ woods/building on Board FrFA). The Finns came charging forward, but one of the HMG toting squads broke in the center woods clump and surrendered for FtR. The other HMG broke on an 11 and that was pretty much game. Too few troops forced to move PB vs 5-4-8 wielding LMGs and the writing was on the wall.

I think the Finns need to put all the wire in the woods hexes on the ocean to avoid an easy German toehold on the victory map. Put at least one gun under the wire and maybe even one of the HMGs. For the Germans, concentrate your forces and take what the Finnish setup gives you. If you force the Finns to come to you, you've pretty much won the game. I'd recommend this one if the Germans try for the ocean assault. Otherwise, it's a pretty standard scenario of moving across relatively open ground to take some hexes. Been there, done that way too may times.
